EMG / NCV Study
Nerve conduction and muscle studies used to find the cause of numbness, tingling, weakness or nerve injury.
EMG (electromyography) and NCV (nerve conduction velocity) studies measure how well nerves and muscles are working. They are often done together in the same visit.
Why it is done
- Numbness, tingling or burning in the hands or feet
- Suspected carpal tunnel syndrome or sciatica
- Muscle weakness or wasting
- Nerve damage after injury or in diabetes
What to expect
Small electrical pulses are used to stimulate the nerve, and a fine needle may be placed into the muscle. Most people find it uncomfortable rather than painful, and the test takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
