Stroke Thrombolysis

Emergency clot-dissolving treatment given in the first hours of a stroke to restore blood flow to the brain.

Thrombolysis uses a clot-dissolving medicine to reopen a blocked artery in the brain. It is most effective when given within a few hours of symptoms starting, which is why stroke is treated as a medical emergency.

Recognising a stroke – act FAST

  • Face – has it drooped on one side?
  • Arms – can both arms be raised and held up?
  • Speech – is it slurred or muddled?
  • Time – call for an ambulance immediately

Our emergency team runs a defined stroke pathway from arrival through imaging to treatment, so that no time is lost.
